Tissue
bank is a place that treats and stores human tissue for various medical and
research purposes. Tissue banking can thus be defined as a collection of various tissues such as blood, bone, heart
valves, skin, cornea, blood vessels and
soft tissues etc. from donors, which are further harvested, sterilized,
processed and preserved by placing under appropriate storage conditions for use
during surgery or medical research. Tissue processing has evolved extensively
in the last few decades and involves the usage of equipment like
cryopreservation, tissue labeling and coding, thawing, alarm and monitoring
systems and quality control. The market can be analyzed based on application
areas such as clinical or therapeutic usage, cosmetic and medical research.

Tissue
banking is used in performing various types of grafting procedures such as cord
blood banking, soft tissue grafting, heart valve transplant and others.
Umbilical cord banking involves collection of the blood left over in the
umbilical cord of a new born and storing it for future use. It contains stem
cells which have the capability to transform into any type of cell in the body
and replicate themselves limitlessly. Because of these qualities, stem cell
banking has become a trend in the medicine industry. Heart valve transplants
are done for patients with defective or damaged airways or heart. A heart valve
can be autografted or taken from another donor; however comparatively autograft
is the fastest healing tissue. Corneal transplant involves the replacement of
damaged corneal tissue with its graft taken from donor. It is of two types:
penetrating keratoplasty also known as full thickness cornea transplant and
endothelial keratoplasty also known as back layer cornea transplant.
Table of Contents and Insights:
Grafting
has been performed since ages but the availability of adequate amount of
tissues at the time of operation was one of the major challenges. To overcome
this challenge, techniques were looked out to preserve living tissues for long
period of time to be used later; this led to the innovation of tissue banking.
In tissue banking, processed tissues are stored at very low temperature and are
maintained by skilled personnel. Skin grafting and bone grafting are the two
major procedures involving the use of tissue banking.
Tissues
preserved in banks can be used for fulfilling variety of medical needs of
people; for example heart valves can be used in patients with serious heart
issues, corneal transplantation used to give visibility to blind people,
tendons and ligaments used in orthopedic surgery and cord blood to treat blood
disorders. Majority of tissues are used for transplantation purposes such as
skin transplantation in burn victims and in plastic surgery for reconstructive
purposes.

Human
tissues are also an important source for cosmetic treatment. Stored skin
tissues are often used for cosmetic surgery to enhance the appearance of
different body parts of people. It includes several techniques such as facial
rejuvenation, breast enhancement or enlargement, nasal surgery and so on.
Tissues
stored in tissue banks are frequently used by scientists in research institutes
to study the molecular basis and pathophysiology of different diseases such as
cancer. This helps in better understanding of the different pathways involved
in disease prognosis which further leads to improved diagnosis and treatment of
the disease.
In
2014, the global tissue banking market was chiefly dominated by Eppendorf AG,
Brooks Automation, Inc, Tecan group, RTI Surgical, Inc. and Thermo Fisher
Scientific. However, the growing number of start-ups coupled with technological
advancements will shift the market share slightly from key players to smaller
companies.
